Here’s a bit of pub trivia for you – Les 2 Alpes (Les Deux Alpes) is one of the oldest ski resorts in the world – second to Chamonix. True to it’s descriptive name. it is made up of two mountain areas – Mont de Lans and Vènosc. Just to confuse matters, the actual resort is not located in either of these villages but sits between them. Here we’re focusing on the aire in Les 2 Alpes resort itself – there is also a popular campsite in Vènosc a short drive away.

The journey to Les 2 Alpes Aire

Just 9 hours from Calais with tolls (13 hours the scenic/cheaper route), Les 2 Alpes is easy to get to and really does have something for everyone on and off piste.

Here’s the catch: There are only 12 motorhome bays in the winter

If you were in Vaujany or Puy Saint Vincent, this wouldn’t be an issue but in one of the most famous resorts in the French Alps, this becomes a problem. The aire itself has 40 spots 28 of which are allocated in the winter to coach parking. The authorities will tell you this is for your safety and because of avalanche risk but you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand that commercial pressures to accommodate the vast number of transfer coaches has meant restricting the motorhome aire to just these 12 powered spots.

You can park in the car park for a little while, hoping to jump into a spot when someone moves out but if you stay overnight, you will get moved on by the Gendarme who visit daily to check you’re displaying your ticket.

This aire is much better suited to people touring and who have the flexibility to move on if there’s no room at the inn. There is an alternative – a campsite 40 minutes down the road at Vènosc which has great access to the resort.

Approach to to Les 2 Alpes

Despite scaremongering by transfer operators, the road to Les Deux Alpes really isn’t anything to worry about. Check out the video below – as you can see, the roads are wide, switchbacks broad and road surface is better than the new bit of the M1.

  • Most people are coming in from the Huez side of the mountain so follow your nose (and the signs – it’s clearly marked)
  • Once through Mont de Lans you hit a few switchbacks – nothing to worry about (see above) the coaches hoon up and down this route every weekend
  • You will see a bridge over the road (lit at night with the Les 2 Alpes logo – see below) – turn immediately left into the car park/aire
  • BEFORE buying a ticket, go to the end of the car park where the winter aire is locate and check there is space. Park up and only then purchase your ticket.
